Ideas for effective kitchen lighting by HomeProToday Editor

For many families the kitchen is the center of everyday family life. Family members meet in the kitchen in the morning to take a good start for the coming day and then rejoin here in the evening in order to discuss the events of the day, share their plans, etc. That’s why the right lights for this multifunctional room are the issue that requires plenty of time and effort. Nevertheless, house owners usually underestimate the importance of proper kitchen lighting, and tend to save money on finding certified specialists to tackle the problem.

Ceiling lighting. No matter how spacious the kitchen is it needs a lot of light, and having some coming from the ceiling is a key element for even illumination. Professionally installed recessed lights with separate zone controls allows to spotlight key functional  areas, such as the kitchen island, stove, sink, cabinets, and brightly light up the entire room. European designers view strangely-structured or classic chandeliers as the central element of a successful kitchen lighting.

Zone kitchen lighting. A pendant or hanging kitchen lights is a perfect way to illuminate the kitchen area from above. A hanging lamp produces a direct downward light onto the kitchen table and defines the area, creating a special dining atmosphere. Use easy-to-install round energy-saving under-cabinet lights to brighten up the countertops that will simplify food preparation and help to support romantic mood afterward. One or a row of several lights over the kitchen island or a table helps to divide a spacious open-plan kitchen area into well-defined, more homey and cordial spaces.

Light up every corner. Often when you concentrate on lighting up the kitchen island and other open zones, you tend to pay less attention to lighting of corners. Usually kitchen cabinets block overhead lights and thus make the countertops light-deprived. Such shadow kitchen areas becomes potentially dangerous especially when you operate with cutlery. In such situation two easy solutions are available: install a fluorescent strip-like cabinet lighting that will produce an even line of light, or use round lights, put little apart. Note that halogen spots burn hot, that’s why don’t try to install them under the cabinets where temperature-sensitive foods are kept.
